A lot of people would like to see many different parts of Europe but simply don’t have the money to do so. Well, there is one option that those people have and it’s to backpack all over Europe. Doing so allows people to see many different countries in Europe and see amazing sites without spending a ton of money. Jacobs Trail is arguably the best trail to follow when deciding to travel on foot throughout Europe. This article will provide more information about Jacob’s Trail for those who are interested in a great journey!

So, what is Jacobs Trail exactly? It’s a trail that people used to take over one thousand years ago. They took it to visit the tomb of the Apostle Jacobus, which is located in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Since this trail was taken by people who wanted to visit a holy site it was considered to be a pilgrimage. Now days people don’t necessarily have to travel the trail and see their journey as a pilgrimage but some people still do travel the trail for the same reason that people did one thousand years ago.

There are plenty of people who want to travel Jacobs Trail but don’t because they know they wouldn’t be able to travel that far on foot. However, those people should know that there are other ways to travel the trail than by walking it. In today’s world it’s now possible to travel parts of the trail by train, bus or ship, which means that people can walk part of the way and then in certain spots give themselves a break to travel one of those three other ways.

After the long journey is over and the end of Jacobs Trail has been reached people will have seen many countries all over Europe. The experience will be like nothing they’ve ever experienced before and what makes it even better is that the end of the trip is a reward in itself. This is because the site of the tomb is still there and whether one is on a pilgrimage or not anyone can enjoy the amazing structures and sites at the end of the trail! Hopefully this article has helped those looking for a great way to travel throughout Europe and experience more than they thought they ever could.

Thru Hike of the Appalachian Trail 2006. Georgia to Maine! Old Goat Summer 2006. This video was made by Old Goat to be used in a presentation he made about Thru Hiking the AT. It’s a great summary of whats involved in an AT Thru hike. You can read about his hike at his trail journal located at: trailjournals.com Enjoy!! __________________________________ Update (Mar 2009) Old Goat hiked most of the AT again. Check 6 (his wife) started in GA Mar 2009, planning to hike to Maine together. Due to injuries, the thru hiked turned into a section hike (large followed by others). 1500+ miles were hiked in 2009, a few more in 2010(more injuries), and hopeful completion this summer 2011.
Top Five Tips for Hiking with Children

It is fun to get out in nature with the family. It provides some quality alone time and a good dose of important exercise. Hiking with your children is a wonderful thing. However, hiking with children can have some serious drawbacks. Below are five tips on how to have a safe and enjoyable hike with children.

Hiking with Children Tip #1 – Proper Clothing and Shoes

All members of the family should wear proper clothing and shoes on a hike. For short hikes, sneakers or cross-trainers will probably suffice. For longer hikes, however, both adults and children will benefit from properly fitting hiking boots.

When hiking with children, it is important to dress them in comfortable, non-binding or chafing clothing. Children will complain readily if their collar is too tight or their waistband rubs their belly. Long pants thick enough to deter thorns and insects are a must for hiking children.

Hiking with Children Tip #2 – Hiking Sticks for Everyone

Hiking sticks can help with balance and support on tricky hiking trails. When hiking with children, provide hiking sticks that are the right size and weight for them. Hiking sticks can either be found wooden branches that are smooth and sturdy, or manmade, purchased varieties. The hiking stick for children should be narrow enough for them to grip and not to heavy.

Hiking with Children Tip #3 – Planning the Route

If a hiking trip is too long, children are apt to complain. Be sure to plan the route before you set out. Either plan to hike in a loop that will take you back to the car or campsites, or hike half the distance out and half back. When hiking with children, it is a great idea to map out the route with them beforehand. They will enjoy following the map and knowing how far they still have to go.

Hiking with Children Tip #4 – Drinks and Snacks

Everyone needs some nourishing drinks and snacks while hiking. The most important thing to carry along when hiking with children is plenty of water. You could also bring sports drink. When hiking with children, it is also a great idea to bring fun snacks that can be carried along. GORP (good old raisins and peanuts), or trail mix is the ultimate hiking snack. Dried fruit, peanut butter crackers, and granola bars are other good choices. Hiking with children takes a lot of energy, and healthy carbohydrates give a burst when you need it.

Hiking with Children Tip #5 – First Aid

When hiking with children, be sure to pack a first aid kit. Of course, adults can also be injured, but small children are more susceptible to cuts and scrapes. A small injury may make a child feel as if they cannot go on. An adult ready with the first aid kit will keep the hiking day more pleasant for children.

Hiking with children is important for physical exercise, appreciation of nature, and family together time. If you want a safe and fun experience, there are certain things you must remember. Staying within the bounds of ability and comfort is important when hiking with children.

Collecting fresh air of nature with physical exercise at the same time, hiking becomes a really fun recreational activity. And you are a fan of hiking, to have a the most comfortable and safe experience of hiking, you can prepare some specific equipment for the trail. The following is some tips to help you purchase your hiking gear.

Hiking Boots

Your hiking boots are very important to your comfort and safety when out on the trail. Hiking boots are specifically designed to give you good foot and ankle support while also providing good grip and traction. There are many different kinds of hiking boots on the market, and the kind you get depends on what type of hiking you plan to do. For small day hikes, look for a pair of lightweight boots that just come up to the ankle.

Look for boots that are made from water resistant and breathable materials. Other than that, the most important thing is fit. You need your boots to fit you like a glove so that you are not only comfortable hiking in them for hours, but also to prevent the risk of injury.

Clothing

The clothing you wear on hikes needs to be appropriate to the conditions and terrain you are going to hike in. You will want a good pair of hiking pants – not jeans – to keep you cool, comfortable and easy to move about in. Even if it is hot, it’s still a good idea to wear pants to protect your skin from scratches, bug bites, poisonous plants and sun exposure. You’ll also want a lightweight, long sleeve shirt and a hat to keep the sun off your face.

Accessories

In addition to having the right boots and clothing, you will also need to include a few essential accessories for your hike.

Invest in an ergonomic backpack that will hold all your goods such as snacks, maps, sunscreen, compass, first aid equipment and personal items. If you plan to do a lot of hiking over rough, rocky terrains, you might want to purchase a collapsible hiking stick that can fit in your pack when not in use. Finally, remember to always pack more water than you think you need. Hiking requires a lot of energy and your body will become dehydrated out on the trail much faster than if you were just walking around town.

Be Prepared

Once you have all your equipment, make sure to enlist a friend to go hiking with you. It’s a good idea to have a partner there not only to make the experience more enjoyable, but also to help you if you run into any trouble. It’s also a good idea to let people back home know exactly where you’ll be and what time they can expect you home.

Shoes- Unlike for normal walks or running shoes, while trekking you will need hard soled shoes. So invest in a good pair of trekking boots.
Rain gear- Depending on when you are travelling, the rain gear you carry will vary, but for safety it is always better to carry adequate rain gear.
Sunscreen – India is pretty close to the equator, so it does tend to get hotter. Simply put, the higher the SPF, the better you are protected. So you won’t go home looking like a baked tomato.
Sandals- Important, especially if you are going to be close to water. Sandals provide general rest, and you can relax in them after sunset when you set up camp.
Cap – This isn’t a fashion statement, so fancy caps won’t work. It’s simpler to get something that protects you, rather than just looks good.
Extra Socks – As important as extra underwear, which I have not mentioned! Remember, it’s your feet that get you around, so it makes sense to keep them clean. On strenuous hikes, make sure that your feet are well protected. Moreover in the mountains, you will need adequate thermal wear to keep you warm; socks are one big part of that.
Tarpaulin- The most useful piece of folded equipment. It can be used to pitch a tent, for emergency protection, ideal for making a kitchen tent, or one man scene.
Extra matches- The worst thing to do outdoors is trying to start a fire the old forgotten caveman method. Technology has provided us with alternatives, and we should use them. So carry a few extra matchboxes, and make sure they are safe, not wet when you need them most.
Torch- Gone are the days of fire lanterns and don’t expect a full moon to light your path. Carry a torch, its an absolute necessity.
Towel- Don’t leave home without it, especially if you plan to hitch a space ride.
First aid Kit- although you may meet some medicine men, and that would be a strange experience, always carry a KIT. Cotton, tablets for generalities, creams, a bandage, some antiseptic, thermometer, a scissor and gauze form a very basic Kit. Many travelers do tend to get stuck with the ‘shits’, so carry enough pills for your stomach.

As any parent can tell you in detail, life changes after having children in that some former activities are off-limits while some are simply altered to adapt to a new more responsible lifestyle. Dependent upon parental opinions, hiking with kids can be a fun and rewarding pastime, with some parents even carrying their toddlers along. Although very young children can be a handful when hiking due to their needs, children that are a little bit older (5 years and above) seem to have a ball hiking and camping with their parents. Safety tips for hiking with children should be learned well by parents and taught to children at every opportunity on the trail. In this manner a child will not only be safer on hiking trips, but will enjoy the activity greater because they have a better grasp of how to act in the outdoors.

A common mistake that parents make when taking kids hiking is to carry everything for their children on the journey. This is a huge mistake born of a parent’s kindness and desire to make the hike as pleasant as possible for their children. Each child should carry a small pack, with very minimal and basic survival gear in the circumstance they become briefly separated from their parents. A child’s pack should include a day’s water ration, a few trail bars or other energy snacks, a warm outer garment, a flashlight, and a cell phone if the child is old enough to know how to use it. A whistle can be used in place of a cell phone for a younger child. A child should be instructed thoroughly what to do should they become separated – stay put, and either telephone for help or blow the whistle constantly at 5 minute intervals until they are found.

Parents should always stay within 25 feet of children when hiking, and take the opportunity as they go along to teach children about the natural world at every chance. In new locations, a parent should always go first on a trail, and ensure that a child does not lag behind. Parents need to make certain that children are dressed properly, as well as behave properly as a guest around wildlife. A short lesson on poisonous and edible plants will prevent issues such as poison ivy or oak, as well as educating children on what plant life may be useful in a pinch. Since harsh weather can occur at any time, children should be constantly aware of changing conditions when hiking.

The greatest safety tips for hiking with children is to ensure that they have knowledge of the outdoors, a respect for nature, and the ability to react appropriately in any given situation. An excellent way to instill these skills is to throw hypothetical situations at your child as a learning tool, to listen to their answers closely, and to make corrections to their responses.

Perhaps you view hiking as easy or a “piece of cake” as some would say. Put on some boots, shorts and a shirt and off you go. How hard can it be? Well, walking is not necessarily the same thing as hiking. Ask any experienced hiker.

Now, some hikes may very well be that easy and those hikes should be. Not all hikes need to be a three or four day venture in the mountains, or navigating through forests or across streams and rivers. It is perfectly fine to just want some fresh air and exercise in nature’s surroundings.

But, if you want to expand your hiking there are some things you should consider in preparation.

An outdoor vacation such as hiking tours does not necessarily fit the “vacation” definition as other vacations may. Yes, you will enjoy yourself but do not approach hiking vacations in the same manner you would a vacation to the Caribbean.

First, you will want to get in shape. Try taking brief, more level hikes in your local area to prepare yourself for the longer hikes. If your lifestyle is fairly sedentary, you will want to slowly build your endurance for the more rigorous hikes. Pain is a top reason why many do not stick to an exercise plan, and that pain is often caused by doing too much too soon.

Obviously, your legs will bear most of the initial burden during the hike, but many muscles are involved actually. Begin preparing yourself with some daily leg squats and thrusts to strengthen your lower muscle groups.

Try to hike with at least one partner unless you are very familiar with the area and it is not a challenging terrain. It is especially important to not hike alone if you are in a new, unfamiliar travel destination. Even for the experienced hiker, signing up for hiking tours in the new area can help familiarize you with the terrain before venturing out on your own. The last thing you want is to get lost in an unfamiliar area.

GPS units and other tools can help, but keep in mind that not all GPS units function in all areas. Also, GPS units will not help if you become ill or injure yourself.

Avoid drinking water from creeks or streams. They may be “natural” sources of water but they are more likely than not full of bacteria, animal waste and other unhealthy toxins even if not man-made pollutants.

Stay on clearly marked trails until you are familiar with the area and gain more experience. Though maps are helpful for those who can read them, GPS units are probably a better option for most hikers. Spend some time learning how to use it and verify that it will work in the area you will be hiking.

Hiking can be a fascinating adventure. Start slowly, and soon you will be ready for the overnight or all day hikes through some of the most beautiful parks, forest and mountains around!

Article by Eve Sands

When it comes to adventure, fun and holidays, people usually get excited about hiking, trekking and similar activities. Hiking vacations will give you a break from your regular mundane schedules. Hiking is a perfect stress-buster activity, and the options of adventurous to serene settings are more than enough to refresh you.

It is important to plan ahead and decide on a schedule for your hiking vacation before you embark on one. Seasonal aspects play a vital role in choosing your hiking trip. Different regions have different weather conditions, and desirable destinations may be closed or otherwise not desirable at certain times of year. So check if the destination that you have chosen has suitable conditions for hiking and what specific hiking gear and supplies are appropriate. You’ll also want to note the most popular times for your hiking destination in order to ensure reservations well ahead of time.

Hiking vacations and trekking are not recommended as impromptu adventures. If you wait until the last minute then you are likely to have mishaps during your hiking vacation due to poor preparation. If it is a family hiking trip then it is even more important to ensure all hikers are properly outfitted, accommodations, gear, provisions and proper clothing such as hiking boots are appropriate for all. For a hiking vacation, you can’t pack the same way you pack for general vacations. Proper hiking equipment, basic first aid and maps/GPS is a must. The most common equipment needed for your hiking vacation is hiking boots or good hiking shoes, a backpack and camping gear.

You can select your hiking boots from:

 Day hiking (light-weight boots) Backpacking/hiking (mid-weight boots), and Extended backpacking (mountaineering boots)

Waterproofing of boots is preferable during a trekking trip where there are ongoing possibilities of water exposure. There are hiking gear and trekking equipment packages available in the market in which you will not miss any of them. Remember that all hiking trails are not created equal, so ensure that hiking routes and trails are appropriate for the hiking experience and fitness of the hikers. Make sure that appropriate foods and water are supplied while hiking. Maps are an important element used in hiking trips that many people over-look. Maps or GPS devices offer a directional guideline for your trip that will provide a degree of safety and security.

A few backpacking tips will make your trip safe yet adventurous. Keep lighter weight items at the bottom and the heavier ones at the top during backpacking. It is a method to balance your centre of gravity. You can adjust the weight according to height and inclination. Keep a checklist of the items that you pack. Small flashlight, compass and earplugs should be included with other equipments. Buy a good quality backpack that should be able to endure heavy weights and general wear and tear. Ballistic nylon backpacks that have padded and adjustable hip belts are better. The other items will include fuel and cooking utensils for over-night hikes and other personal items (filter, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and camera).
